The first part of the gift was easy: there was only one season of the baking show on Netflix, but the rest were available on DVD from England. It required also buying a DVD player from England, but that was just a few more clicks.

Gus thought the next part would be nearly as easy, but it quickly turned out not to be.

“What do you mean all the recipes aren’t—”

Gus shook his head and got to work.

People in town were delighted by the prospect of keeping a Christmas surprise from Gus, so Cara had plenty of eager accomplices, from Ilie and Becca to Mrs. McCullough to Sandy at the hospital to Mr. Evans the jeweler.

There was really only one person Cara was worried about getting to cooperate.

He answered the phone on the second ring, before Cara had time to convince herself that she would just leave a voicemail.

“Cara?” Laurence said, sounding genuinely concerned. It surprised her anew how much his voice was like Gus’s, and she remembered the firm grip of his hand on hers as he took his turn dancing with her at her wedding, and the brotherly kiss he had bestowed on her cheek.

“Laurence,” Cara said. “Nothing’s wrong, I just need your help with a present for Gus.”

There was a little pause, and then Laurence said dubiously, “My help?”

“Lots of people’s help, including yours,” Cara said, and she launched into the explanation she’d given dozens of times now.

She hardly had time for suspense before Laurence said, “Yes, of course. What file format?”

It arrived in her email barely half an hour later. She couldn’t help hugging herself, smiling as tears leaked from her eyes, when she listened to it.
